my friend Lina and I have been planning our work and travel since October 2020. It wasn’t easy. This big question mark, whether we could implement our plans as planned, always hovered over our heads – Corona … It quickly became clear that outside Europe would be difficult. We often checked the travel advice from the Foreign Office and in January the decision was made: We are going to Ireland! Both friends and family soon found out about our plans and for my birthday I received some Ireland travel guides. In June / July we followed the reports from the Foreign Office with great interest, as Ireland initially set a 2-week quarantine for all immigrants. At the beginning of August, however, the message: Vaccinated and tested people from Germany only have to stay at one address for 14 days. So far so good, now we just needed one contact point to get started. The plan was to write to various Irish farms and families via Workaway, an internet community for arranging jobs abroad on farms, in families, B & Bs …, in order to start Work and Travel there. Unfortunately, we had to painfully discover that most of them were already booked for our travel period or they were only accepting guests who were already in Ireland. We were already thinking about alternatives, only considering starting in October, when there might be vacancies again, but then the good news: a farm in Ireland wanted to accept us! Unfortunately, we were canceled a day later because they had decided on a different couple. That Saturday evening Lina and I talked for a long time about our options and realized that Ireland was just one of many countries in Europe. A few weeks earlier we were in Sweden with friends and had noticed how beautiful the landscape and how friendly the people were. Hence our decision: Sweden. So on Sunday morning I wrote to some farms in Sweden and asked if they would have capacities for us from September 15, 2021. The first answer was just 1.5 hours later: a family near Gothenburg wanted to take us in on their horse ranch! At other farms, too, we received almost only positive answers. So we booked the ferry from Sassnitz to Ystad for September 17th, 2021 on the same day! So now we can almost start!
